VAGINITIS (BACTERIA)

SYMPTOMS: Malodorous off-white discharge, "fishy" or other unpleasant smell

CAUSE: Overgrowth of the bacteria Gardnerella vaginalis

DIAGNOSIS: Microscopic examination of the vaginal discharge or culture

TREATMENT: Various prescription creams or gels inserted into the vagina

PREVENTION: Condoms may reduce the chance of getting this problem. It usually is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease but semen may change the vaginal environment to favor the growth of the offending bacteria.
