Cause: the Herpes Simplex virus, types 1 and 2
Symptoms: This virus can also cause fever blisters or cold sores around the mouth or genital region. It can also infect any area of skin which has been traumatized even slightly. Women who get this virus may have dozens of very sore blisters or ulcers all over the genital area. The infection can be so bad that urination is impossible due to swelling. The use of a catheter to drain the bladder might be required. Hospitalization and narcotics are sometimes necessary.
Complications: In addition to the problems discussed above complications of pregnancy are possible. If a woman has her first infection with the virus in the later stages of pregnancy she can pass it on to her child. Herpes infection of a newborn baby can be fatal or leave the child with permanent damage.
Herpes can also infect the eyes. It is the leading cause of infectious blindness in the world.
Treatment: Anti-viral drugs are very useful in treatment of the symptoms and prevention of recurrences.
Prevention: Condoms are very effective but only with respect to the area they cover and contact. A person with oral herpes can transmit to a partner's genitals by oral sex.
Unfortunately the majority of men and women who have this virus don't realize it. A blood test can identify people who are carriers.
If your partner knows he is a carrier or if he has ever had a girlfriend with herpes you need to have a consultation with a gynecologist knowledgeable in this area.
