Cause: the bacteria Actinomyces israelii

Symptoms: Abnormal pain or bleeding can occur with infections.

Complications: Chronic pelvic pain or infertility

Treatment: Antibiotics

Prevention: Don't use an IUD for birth control. This infection occurs almost exclusively in women who have an IUD in place. Mild infections can sometimes be diagnosed on a Pap smear.
