STERILIZATION (MALE)
The tubes (vas deferens) of the man that connect the testicles (where the sperm are made) to the outside can be cut and tied. This blocks the sperm from getting out and slowly turns off their production.
Advantages include:
- This operation is usually a simple procedure done in a doctor's office.
- It is about 99% effective.
- This procedure is safer and less expensive than female sterilization.
Disadvantages include:
- Complications of the surgery are uncommon, but not rare.
- Trying to reverse the procedure is difficult, expensive (not covered by insurance) and often does not work to restore fertility. It should be considered permanent.
