This section is for students of the English language. It assumes good ability to read English and
access to a large dictionary. This is an opportunity to enhance your understanding of the language
and learn more about American culture.
Lyrics to songs are like poetry. They contain rich images of life in the United States, England
and Canada. Sometimes they contain unusual words or phrases, or common words used in a
different way. These will be explained in footnotes.
You may recognize some of the songs, but most will be new to you. Most of the
songs are thirty or more years old, since these are among the best, and the ones least likely to
be already known to you.
