(Address to a joint session of Congress, 4/19/51. He was the commander of American forces in Korea where he turned the tide against the North Koreans and Chinese. He wanted to go further and enter mainland China and suggested the Nationalist Chinese (from Formosa = Taiwan) join him. President Truman, as Commander-in-Chief, ordered him back to the U.S. and fired him. Truman did not want to risk a major war with Mao. American public opinion was strongly on the side of MacArthur. In a show of support the Congress invited him to a joint session to address the nation.)
